JEF United Chiba

The Asian Club Championship of 1986–87 remains the club's furthest reach, won while it still played as Furukawa Electric. It arrived at the end of a decade in which the team had already taken the Japan Soccer League in 1976 and 1985, and the JSL Cup three times.

Two decades later the club won the J.League Cup in 2005 and again in 2006, under the name it had just adopted. Until 2005 it played as JEF United Ichihara; the switch to JEF United Chiba followed the widening of the home base to Chiba City, and the full official name — JEF United Ichihara Chiba — still carries both. The 1991 merger with the football team of East Japan Railway is where the JEF comes from: Japan East Furukawa.

Then 2009. Relegation from J1 ended forty-four unbroken seasons in the top flight, a run no other Japanese club had. The return took until 2025, and it came through the promotion playoffs rather than automatically.

Home is the Fukuda Denshi Arena, shortened to Fuku-Ari, a 19,781-seat ground in Chiba City. The nickname Inu — the Dogs — comes from the Akita Inu mascots.

Pierre Littbarski played here, as did Juninho Paulista; Shinji Ono began his career at the club.

All of it grew out of a company side formed in 1946, playing in the yellow, green and red it still wears.
