Jitex Women

Six Swedish championships arrived across three different formats of the top flight — the Svenska mästerskapet, Division 1, and the Damallsvenskan play-offs — a mark of how long Jitex stayed near the top of the women's game rather than of one golden generation. The titles fell in 1974, 1976, 1979, 1981, 1984 and 1989, with three Svenska Cupen wins added in 1981, 1982 and 1984. Pia Sundhage was part of that run, finishing as the league's top scorer in 1979 with 25 goals before she went on to coach the national teams of Sweden and the United States.

The club formed in Mölndal, just outside Gothenburg, on 21 January 1971, and has stayed there — worth stating because Borås press coverage and matches played in that region have left some with the mistaken idea that Jitex belongs there instead. It plays in purple, the colour behind the nickname klubben med det lila hjärtat, the club with the purple heart, and calls Åbyvallen home, a ground that holds 1,500.

Money trouble forced a merger in 1993, when Jitex combined with the women's section of local rival GAIS to form Jitex BK/JG93; the arrangement held until 1997, when the club reverted to its own name. Elisabeth Leidinge kept goal through much of that era, from 1979 to 1991, and won more than 100 caps for Sweden along the way. Anette Niklasson, known as Vinden, played in every one of the winning finals and still holds the club's Damallsvenskan scoring record. More recently, Fridolina Rolfö made her debut in 2011 and went on to win Olympic gold in 2020.

Across the city, IFK Göteborg remains the fixture that matters most, the Gothenburg derby; GAIS, once a partner out of necessity, carries its own history with the club.
