Karpaty

Karpaty grew out of the Selmash factory side, inheriting its green-and-white stripes, and settled into the Ukraina Stadium when it opened in 1963, then holding around 41,700 seats. The pitch itself was relaid in 2007.

Lev Brovarsky, voted the club's best player in a 2000 poll, remains its record appearance-maker with 412 games and 47 goals.

Ukrainian Cup finals brought only defeat, both to Dynamo Kyiv — 1-2 in 1993 and 0-3 in 1999 — and league football has yielded a best finish of fourth, in the Soviet championship of 1976 and again domestically in 2004. Between 1981 and 1989 the club was dissolved and folded into the army side SKA, the same institution whose old rivalry still colours the Lviv derby against FC Lviv. The other fixture that matters, against Volyn Lutsk, has a rougher edge to it, with crowd trouble and disputes over damaged stands part of its recent history.

What Karpaty carries into this decade is a legal technicality rather than a trophy gap: the club reorganised in 2020-2021, and in 2023 the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled the current entity a new one, not the legal successor to the side that won in Rostov in 1969.
