Long Island Rough Riders

The Mitchel Athletic Complex sits at 1 Charles Lindbergh Blvd in Uniondale. The Long Island Rough Riders play here because it is the only ground close enough to South Huntington to matter.

They arrived in 1994, a year the region had waited for. The city gave them the nickname "Rough Riders," a nod to the volunteer cavalry led by Theodore Roosevelt. It was not just a name; it was a promise of grit. The following year, they snatched the USISL Championship in 1995, beating Minnesota Thunder 2-1 in the final.

For years, the club moved between leagues, a constant search for stability. The colours—blue and white—stayed the same, but the structure around them shifted. Then came 2002. They won the USL Second Division Championship, again defeating Wilmington Hammerheads 2-1. That victory mattered because it proved the club could compete outside its immediate neighbourhood.

Since then, the glory has faded into division titles and youth achievements. They continue to field a squad, but the question is no longer how far they can go, but whether they can stay relevant in a landscape that has moved on.
