«Macará»
A group of students at the Colegio Nacional Bolívar met in Ambato's Montealvo park in 1939 to found a football club, and an army captain, Galo Molina, talked them out of a name. He suggested Macará instead, and the students agreed.
Its record in Ecuadorian football reads as a long climb between divisions. Macará reached Serie A for the first time in 1960, then dropped down in 1978 and again in 1991, before working its way back.
Serie A has been harder to crack. Macará has never won it, and its best finish came in 2019 — third place, enough to send the club into the Copa Libertadores for the first time. Relegation followed in 2022, reversed the next year when the 2023 Serie B title brought an immediate return to the top flight.
