Niki Volos

The meetings with Olympiacos Volos, played out under the name Volos Derby, carry more weight in the city than either club's league position usually justifies.

The Blue-Whites spent most of the twentieth century winning the Thessaly Football Clubs Association Championship rather than anything national, taking that regional title ten times between 1933 and 1976. The one campaign the club still measures itself against is 1960–61, when winning the northern group of the Beta Ethniki sent Niki into the Alpha Ethniki for the first time. They stayed there five seasons before dropping back down, and it took until 2014 for them to get another shot at the top flight, this time via the Football League play-offs.

That second promotion, 48 years after the first spell in the top division ended, lasted only half a season. A match-fixing scandal and the club's finances caught up with it together, and Niki withdrew from the Super League partway through 2014–15, going straight back down. They have played their home games since at the Pantelis Magoulas Stadium, holding around 4,500, well down the scale from the grounds of the sides they briefly shared a division with.

Since that withdrawal, a second stint in the Alpha Ethniki era top flight has not come again, and the 1960s remain the only period Niki Volos spent among the country's elite for any length of time.
