Ask why Nova Iguaçu take the field in orange from shirt to socks, and the answer starts nowhere near a football pitch. In the 1930s the city was among the world's biggest exporters of oranges, and when 25 local football people founded the club on 1 April 1990, the colour came with the territory. It earned the team a nickname borrowed from elsewhere: Carrossel da Baixada, an echo of the Dutch "Clockwork Orange" of 1974.

One of those 25 founders, Jânio Moraes, has run the club as president ever since. Zinho, born in Nova Iguaçu and a World Cup winner with Brazil in 1994, was another founder, and he returned to play for the club in 2005, near the end of his career. That year he also brought in Edmundo, hoping the forward could rebuild his career in Nova Iguaçu's colours.

The academy has produced its own names. Deivid de Souza, born locally, scored 82 goals in 148 appearances for the club before winning Brazilian titles with Corinthians and Cruzeiro. Schwenck, another product of the youth ranks, finished as the Série B1's top scorer with 11 goals in 2016, the year Nova Iguaçu won that division.

Licensing troubles kept the club out of professional competition in 1997, 2001 and 2002, but it never merged with another side or changed its name. Its derby is against Artsul, also from Nova Iguaçu, in a fixture known as the Clássico da Baixada. The trophy cabinet holds two Copa Rio titles, from 2008 and 2012, and three Campeonato Carioca Série A2 crowns, the last of them in 2020.
