Opava

Opava carries a German name in its own football history before it carries a Czech one. The club founded there in 1907, Troppauer Fussballverein, kept some form of that identity for over three decades — merging with a cycling club in 1909 to become Deutscher Sportverein Troppau, then renamed NS Turngemeinde Troppau after the annexation of the Sudetenland in 1939. When the German population left Opava in 1945, the club went with it. A new, Czech side rose on the same ground, and it changed name five times before settling, in 1998, on SFC Opava.

The yellow and blue now worn dates only to 1994; before that, from the 1950s, the club played in red and black. Home matches are at the Stadion v Městských sadech, renamed Simply Arena under a sponsorship deal in July 2025.

Opava's only spell in the Czech top flight before 2018 ran from 1995 to 2000. The return came after winning the second-tier Fotbalová národní liga, and followed a Czech Cup final the previous year — a 0-1 defeat to Zlín at the Andrův stadion in Olomouc on 17 May 2017. Alois Grussmann, top-flight top scorer with 33 goals in 131 appearances through the 1990s and 2000s, later came back to the club as a coach.

Baník Ostrava is the fixture that matters most, sharpened into the Silesian derby once Opava's 1995 promotion put the sides in the same division. The two have met 28 times since; Baník leads 13 wins to 6, with 9 draws, and the record crowd, 18,020, came in 2004.

In 2024 the city of Opava, which had owned the club, sold it to the company A.I.K. spol. s.r.o.
