In April 2019, more than 18,000 people packed into Anoeta for a Copa de la Reina semi-final. Real Sociedad went on to beat Atlético Madrid 2–1 in the final.
The section was formed on 19 September 2004 and climbed through the regional divisions fast enough to reach the top flight by 2006–07, finishing ninth on debut. By 2011–12 it was offering players professional contracts, ahead of most of Spanish women's football. A second Copa de la Reina final followed in 2024, lost to Barcelona, and a runners-up finish in Liga F came in 2021–22. The club made its first appearance in the UEFA Women's Champions League in 2022.
They train and play at Estadio Izan within the Zubieta complex. Amaiur Sarriegi captained the side through much of this rise, scoring 53 goals in 137 appearances before leaving for Atlético Madrid in 2025.
