Sporting Bertrange

Every promotion in Sporting Bertrange's history has come from the same tier the club knows best — the moment its own supporters describe as "climbing back up again," a phrase that has followed the team through four separate spells in the 2nd Division and four more in the 3rd. Nobody at the club talks about the top flight, because nobody there has ever played in it. What they talk about instead is 1956, the one year the club reached beyond its usual level: a run to the final of the Coupe de Luxembourg, ended by a 0–1 defeat to Young Boys Diekirch. It remains the closest Sporting Bertrange has come to a major trophy.

The club was founded in 1933 under its present name, though for four years during the German occupation it was made to play as SpV Bartringen, reverting to Sporting Bertrange once the war had passed. That interruption aside, the story since has been one of repeated cycles between the third and second tiers — titles won in 1946, 1960, 1967 and 1973 at the lower level, then again in 1991, 1994, 2004 and 2008 one step up, without the run of form ever carrying the club into the BGL Ligue.

Matches are played on the artificial pitch at the Plaine des Jeux André Wolff, a modest ground with floodlights that holds around 2,000, and the players still turn out in the club's blue and white. There is no nickname attached to the name, no single rivalry that defines the fixture list, though matches against Ehlerange and Jeunesse Canach in the cup have carried some needle down the years. For now, the task in Bertrange is the one it usually is: hold a place in the 2nd Division and find a way to make the step up stick for longer than before.
