In 1994, the Victorian Soccer Federation ordered the club to drop the name George Cross and take the field as Sunshine Georgies instead. Only in 2010 did the federation let the club revert to the name it had carried from the start.
That start was Melbourne's Maltese community, who formed George Cross FC on 12 March 1947. The club amalgamated with Sunshine City in 1983, becoming Sunshine George Cross and settling at Chaplin Reserve, where it stayed until the ground was sold in 2018. A year in the National Soccer League followed almost immediately after the merger, and the club spent from 1984 to 1991 in the national competition, finishing fourth in 1986 at its highest.
The Australia Cup came in 1964, George Cross beating APIA Leichhardt 3–2, and the Dockerty Cup was won three times, in 1959, 1962 and 1978. A Victorian State League championship followed in 1977. Saso Markovski scored 25 goals in the 1997 season, still the club's single-season record. Matches against North Sunshine Eagles are still played as the Sunshine Derby.
The Chaplin Reserve sale pushed the club further out from Sunshine itself: in 2019 it moved to the City Vista Recreation Reserve in Fraser Rise and took the name Caroline Springs George Cross FC.
