Granit Xhaka went through this age group before he became captain of the senior side, and so did Xherdan Shaqiri, Ricardo Rodriguez and Yann Sommer — a run of players who came up together and later carried Switzerland into tournaments as adults. That pipeline is what the U19 side, run by the Swiss Football Association out of its Muri bei Bern headquarters, exists to feed.

The closest it came to a title of its own was in 2004, when Switzerland hosted the European Under-19 Championship and won Group A, beating Belgium, drawing with Italy and Ukraine. Turkey ended the run in the semi-final, 3-2 after extra time. Switzerland reached the finals twice more, in 2002 and 2009, without getting out of the group either time.

It has no ground to call its own, moving between club stadiums and training centres for its fixtures, though a dedicated national training base is planned for Thun later this decade.
