Tunis is where the federation keeps its offices, in the El Manzah district, but the national side has not played there since 2001: home fixtures move south to the Stade Hammadi Agrebi in Radès, a ground built for 65,000.
A Tunisian team took the field under the French protectorate as early as 11 March 1928. The side as it now stands dates from the Fédération Tunisienne de Football, formed on 29 March 1957, and from a first official match against Algeria on 2 June that year. The eagle on the crest gave the team its nickname, Eagles of Carthage; the white shirt and red change strip repeat the flag.
Argentina 1978 is still the reference point. Tunisia beat Mexico 3-1, the first win by an African or Arab side at a World Cup finals, and still went out in the group. What followed was a decade without reward: six straight Africa Cup of Nations tournaments missed between 1980 and 1992, and no return to the World Cup until 1998. The one Cup of Nations Tunisia has won came at home, 2-1 over Morocco in the 2004 final at Radès; the African Nations Championship followed in 2011, and, further back, the first Arab Cup in 1963.
Radhi Jaïdi's 105 caps, won between 1996 and 2009, remain the appearance record; Issam Jemaa's 36 goals stand as the scoring one. Algeria is still the fixture Tunisians call the Maghreb derby, forty-nine meetings with a narrow edge to the Algerians; against Egypt, over thirty-five games, the balance runs the other way.
The most recent World Cup brought a crisis without precedent in the competition's history: Sabri Lamouchi was sacked after one match, a 5-1 defeat to Sweden, and his replacement, Hervé Renard, lasted two games longer before he went too.
