Verl

The Sportclub Arena holds 5,207 people, a number set after building work finished in 2023 reshaped a ground that used to go by the plainer name Stadion an der Poststraße. It is not a large venue, and Verl has never pretended to be a big-city club; the black-and-white shirts have stayed tied to a single town in Ostwestfalen since a group of young men, several of them arrivals from the Ruhr area, met in Ignaz Schröder's guest house on 6 September 1924 and formed SC Verl. An athletics section ran alongside the football side in the early years, closed in 1929, and the club has carried the same name ever since, without a merger to complicate the record.

The clearest measure of Verl's ceiling sits in the Westfalenpokal, which the club has won four times — 1992, 1999, 2007 and again in 2026, when they beat SF Lotte in the final. A run to the last sixteen of the DFB-Pokal in 2019/20 stands as the club's best showing in the German Cup proper, and it came under Uli Sude, a former Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper, in a season that also produced a win over Mönchengladbach itself — Arne Friedrich, on the books at Verl that year, scored the decisive penalty. Friedrich later captained Hertha and played at the 2006 World Cup. Roger Schmidt wore the captain's armband during Verl's Regionalliga spell before building a coaching career that took him to Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund.

Local rivalry has centred on SV Rödinghausen, a neighbouring club in the same region, with meetings between the two billed as a Pokalderby whenever the cup draw brings them together. FC Gütersloh has supplied the older grudge, forged across years when both clubs sat in the lower leagues fighting over the same small patch of Westphalia. None of that history needed a big stage. It has played out, mostly, in front of a few thousand people at a rebuilt ground on the edge of a town that gave the club its only name.
