The side answers to the Zimbabwe Football Association, though the line runs back further, to the Football Association of Rhodesia, which joined FIFA in 1965 — the year the current federation counts as its founding, even though it played under the Rhodesian name until 1979 and returned to FIFA as Zimbabwe only after independence, in 1980. At the National Sports Stadium in Harare, built for 60,000, green and yellow have stayed the colours through all of it.

Zimbabwe has lifted the COSAFA Cup six times, in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2017 and 2018, with three further runner-up finishes at the tournament. The Africa Cup of Nations has been a harder door — six appearances, the furthest of them stopping at the group stage.
