The Africa Continental Cup serves as a developmental platform for emerging cricketing nations within the continent. Formerly known as the ACA Africa T20 Cup, the tournament operates outside the primary qualification routes for the ICC T20 World Cup. It specifically excludes full members such as South Africa and Zimbabwe to focus on associate and affiliate members. This structure fosters growth in nations where the sport is still developing. The event was inaugurated in 2022, having been postponed from 2019. It represents a distinct format from the domestic South African version of the Africa T20 Cup. The competition typically features eight teams navigating a group stage before progressing to semi-finals and a final. Uganda secured victory in both the 2022 and 2023 editions, establishing a strong presence in the early years of the T20 format. In 2024, the tournament underwent a rebranding exercise to become the Africa Continental Cup. The International League T20 (ILT20) assumed organizational control, marking a shift from the previous Africa Cricket Association (ACA) administration. The ACA itself was founded in 1997, replacing the Zone VI Cricket Confederation. While the original continental championship was an One Day International (ODI) tournament won by Kenya, the current iteration focuses exclusively on the Twenty20 format. The competition provides T20I status within a continental championship framework. It differs from the ICC Africa T20 World Cup Qualifiers by prioritizing development over direct qualification. Participants include nations such as Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, and Malawi. The tournament aims to prepare teams for higher levels of international cricket rather than serving as a direct gateway to the global stage.
