About

The Andhra Premier League (APL) is a state-level Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament in India. Organized by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), the competition operates as a parallel entertainment league rather than a tier in the official domestic pyramid. The tournament sits within the Indian cricket structure, distinct from the national Indian Premier League (IPL) and the official BCCI state championship, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The competition consists of private franchise teams representing specific regions of the state, such as Amaravathi, Vizag, and Rayalaseema. This structure differs from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which features an official Andhra Pradesh state team selected through trials. The APL and the Telangana Premier League (TPL) are direct consequences of the 2014 bifurcation of the former unified state of Andhra Pradesh. The ACA organizes the APL for residual Andhra Pradesh, while the Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) organizes the TPL for Telangana.

The format involves a single round-robin league stage where each team plays every other team once, followed by a top-four playoff system comprising an Eliminator, Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2, and the Final. The 2025 season featured seven teams, with the Tungabhadra Warriors emerging as champions after defeating Capital Amaravathi Royals by five wickets in the final. Previous winners include Vizag Warriors in 2024, Rayalaseema Kings in 2023, and Coastal Riders in 2022. No team has won the tournament more than once.

The APL serves as a platform for local talent to showcase skills for selection in higher-level state or national teams. There is no promotion or relegation system between the APL and other domestic leagues; the franchise structure is maintained, though teams may be rebranded or replaced between seasons. The tournament expanded from six to seven teams for the 2025 season, adding teams such as Capital Amaravathi Royals, Bhimavaram Bulls, Kakinada Kings, Royals of Rayalaseema, Simhadri Vizag Lions, and Vijayawada Sunshiners alongside the existing contenders.
