The Bangabandhu T20 Cup was a domestic Twenty20 cricket competition organised by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). It emerged in 2020–21 as a response to the suspension of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) during the pandemic. BCB President Nazmul Hassan initiated the tournament to keep local talent active while international stars were absent from the BPL.
This event stood apart from the BPL because it featured only Bangladeshi players. International stars did not participate. The league comprised five franchise teams: Beximco Dhaka, Gemcon Khulna, Fortune Barishal, Minister Group Rajshahi, and Gazi Group Chattogram. These sides played a double round-robin group stage before advancing to a knockout phase. The knockout stage included an eliminator, two qualifiers, and a final. Gemcon Khulna secured the trophy by defeating Gazi Group Chattogram in the final match by five runs.
The structure differed from the traditional pyramid system used in club-based cricket in Bangladesh. There was no promotion or relegation linking it to the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League. It operated as a standalone franchise league. The competition carried the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh.
The tournament remained a singular edition. No further seasons under this specific name occurred in the following years. The BCB relied on the BPL and other domestic formats such as the BCB President's Cup for subsequent seasons. This makes the 2020–21 season the sole instance of the Bangabandhu T20 Cup in its history. It served as a temporary platform for domestic development during a period of global disruption.
