The Big Bash League is the premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia, established in 2011 by Cricket Australia. It replaced the previous state-based competition with a city-based franchise model. The league operates as a closed system with no promotion or relegation.
The season typically runs from December to January, accommodating the Australian summer. Eight franchises participate in the tournament. These include the Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, and Sydney Thunder. Each team plays ten matches during the round-robin group stage. This group phase leads into a four-team knockout finals series. The finals consist of the Qualifier, Knockout, Challenger, and Final.
The Perth Scorchers are the most successful team, having won the title six times as of the 2025–26 season. They secured their latest victory by defeating the Sydney Sixers in the final. The competition is distinct from the Sheffield Shield, Australia's traditional first-class competition. While the Sheffield Shield is a multi-day format essential for Test cricket selection and technical development, the Big Bash League is a short-format, entertainment-focused T20 league designed for commercial appeal and T20 skill development.
