The Big Bash League is a professional Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia. It operates under a city-based franchise model, replacing the earlier state-based KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. The league is owned and run by Cricket Australia.
The season takes place during the Australian summer, running from December to February. Teams play a modified double round-robin format, which involves ten matches per side in the regular stage. This is followed by a four-team finals series that includes Qualifier, Knockout, and Challenger matches to determine the champion.
Eight clubs compete in the tournament. The participants are the Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades, Perth Scorchers, Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, and Hobart Hurricanes. The Perth Scorchers have secured six titles, making them the most successful side in the competition's history. They are also the reigning champions.
The league uses a franchise draft system for player selection and does not have promotion or relegation. It runs in parallel with the Sheffield Shield and Marsh One-Day Cup, which are state-based competitions. The tournament is sponsored by KFC.
