The Big Bash League serves as the premier professional Twenty20 cricket competition in Australia. Founded by Cricket Australia in 2011, the tournament transitioned from a state-based model to a permanent franchise system. Unlike traditional domestic structures, the league features city-based teams that operate without promotion or relegation. The current season comprises eight franchises, including the Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades, Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Strikers, Perth Scorchers, and Hobart Hurricanes.
The competition structure prioritizes entertainment and accessibility. Matches are frequently scheduled as afternoon day-night fixtures, designed to attract family audiences. The format underwent significant adjustments in the 2023–24 season, reducing the group stage from 14 matches per team to 10. The top four teams advance to a finals series that includes a Qualifier, Knockout, Challenger, and Final. This progression determines the champion of the domestic T20 pyramid.
Innovation defines the playing rules within the league. The current regulations feature the 'Power Surge', a second powerplay period occurring in overs 11–20. Past iterations included the 'X-Factor', a modified super substitute rule, and the 'Bash Boost' bonus point system, both of which have since been removed. These changes reflect the league's continuous effort to differentiate itself from the representative nature of the Sheffield Shield and Marsh One-Day Cup.
Perth Scorchers hold the record for the most titles with six championships, followed by the Sydney Sixers with four. The competition maintains a distinct commercial identity, focusing on high-entertainment value rather than the traditional representative status associated with other Australian cricket competitions.
