The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier serves as the final gateway for nations seeking a place in the global championship. Originally launched as the ICC Trophy in 1979, the competition was renamed in 2014 to reflect its primary role. It sits at the apex of the qualification structure for teams outside the automatic qualifiers, determining the last spots for the One Day International tournament. The event has historically been significant beyond simple qualification, having served as the primary pathway for associate nations to achieve full membership status. Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Bangladesh all reached Test status through victories in this tournament.
The 2023 edition featured ten nations competing in a group stage followed by a Super Six format. The top two sides from that stage secured their places in the World Cup. Sri Lanka claimed the title, defeating the Netherlands in the final held in Harare. Zimbabwe remains the most successful team in the competition's history with three titles, while Scotland and Sri Lanka have each won twice. Matches in the qualifier carry One Day International status, a change implemented to raise the standard of play.
The qualification pathway has evolved over time. Following the discontinuation of the World Cup Super League, the structure now relies on League 2 and the qualifier to determine the remaining participants for the 2027 tournament. The current champion, Sri Lanka, added to their legacy in the most recent edition. The tournament operates as a concentrated event held in the year preceding the World Cup, distinguishing it from the longer league formats used elsewhere in the qualification cycle.
