It is not an annual standalone league but a periodic tournament held within the World Cup qualification cycle. Organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) through its regional body, ICC Americas, the event determines which nation secures a berth in the global competition. The specific format and participating teams vary by cycle, often involving a sub-regional qualifier phase followed by the Regional Final.

In the 2023 edition, held in Bermuda, four teams participated: Canada, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, and Panama. Canada received a bye to this final stage after competing in the Global Qualifiers, while the other three advanced from the Sub-Regional Qualifier in Argentina. The tournament was played as a double round-robin group. Canada finished top of the table with nine points, tied with Bermuda but ahead on Net Run Rate, thereby qualifying for the 2024 T20 World Cup. In the 2025 edition, held in Canada, Canada again qualified automatically, joining Bahamas, Bermuda, and Cayman Islands. Canada won the tournament with a perfect six-game record, defeating Bermuda in the final to secure the Americas spot.

The tournament structure has evolved from the older ICC Americas Championship divisions, which had formal promotion and relegation, to the current World Cup qualification pathway where the Regional Final winner advances to the Global Qualifier.
