The fixture between India A and Australia A is not a standalone, recurring competition with a fixed annual format, pyramid status, or permanent trophy. It is an ad-hoc bilateral arrangement organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket Australia for player development and preparation for senior international series.
The India A team was established in 1992 by the BCCI, making its first-class debut in January 1995. The Australia A team was officially branded in 1994 by the Australian Cricket Board (now Cricket Australia), though it had operated as a Second XI previously, making its first-class debut in December 1997.
The first dedicated bilateral series between the two A-teams was the 2006 Top End Series in Australia, consisting of two first-class and three List A matches, which India A won 1-0 in Tests and 2-1 in ODIs. Prior to this, encounters were limited to multi-team tournaments (triangular or quadrangular series) in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2018. The 2018 tour in India is sometimes cited as the first dedicated bilateral Test series, but the 2006 series predates it as a bilateral engagement.
Recent series include India A's tour of Australia in October–November 2024, where Australia A won both unofficial Tests, and Australia A's tour of India in September–October 2025, where India A won the first-class series 1-0 and the List A series 2-1. There is no permanent trophy associated with these matches, distinguishing them from the senior Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The format varies by tour but typically includes first-class and List A matches. The teams are developmental squads, not part of a formal league pyramid.
