The two nations first met in an international context during the 2007 Cricket World Cup in Trinidad, where Bangladesh secured a five-wicket victory. Their first and only Test match took place in Mirpur in April 2023. Bangladesh won that contest by seven wickets, with Mushfiqur Rahim scoring 126 and 51 not out for his side, while Lorcan Tucker hit 108 for Ireland. Andy McBrine claimed six wickets for 118 runs in that match.

Recent bilateral activity in 2023 saw Bangladesh win both the Twenty20 International series in Sylhet and Chattogram and the One Day International series in Chelmsford. During the tour match in March, Ireland defeated the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI by 77 runs.
