Toronto Maple Leafs 2:1 Ottawa Senators
Toronto Maple Leafs took a narrow 2:1 victory over Ottawa Senators in their NHL opener on the night of 23 September 2026. It was a tight contest from the first whistle, and the hosts held on when it mattered most. By then, the crowd had settled into a rhythm of anticipation, and the ice felt heavier with every passing minute.
Both sides came in with questions to answer. Toronto had dropped four of their last five games, including two losses to Montreal this week. Ottawa were still searching for their first win of the campaign, having lost their previous outing to Montreal as well. Neither team had much to lose, and that tends to let the game flow.
The deciding moment came in the second period when Toronto struck first. Ottawa responded with pressure, but the Maple Leafs defence held firm through a stretch where the visitors had nothing to do all evening. The hosts then added a second goal late on, and things came to a head as the final minutes ticked away.
What stood out was the tempo. Toronto played the second half a man up in spirit if not in numbers, keeping possession and forcing Ottawa into mistakes. The visitors turned it on in the third period, but one mistake ended their hopes of a comeback. The stadium fell silent when the final whistle blew.
On paper, the result barely moves the needle. Both teams sit at zero games and zero points in the standings — the season has just started and the table says nothing yet. What matters is the momentum, and Toronto carried that into the next fixture.
