About

The One-Day Cup is the premier domestic 50-over List A cricket competition in England and Wales. Administered by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), it features the 18 first-class county clubs. Its lineage dates back to 1963 with the inaugural Gillette Cup, the first major one-day knockout tournament in the country. Over time, the event cycled through various sponsor names and formats, including the NatWest Trophy and the 40-over ECB40.

The current 50-over structure was established in 2014. The tournament begins with a group stage where the 18 teams are split into two regional groups. Each side plays a round-robin schedule within its group. The top four teams from each group progress to the knockout phase, which includes quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final. The championship match is traditionally held at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. There is no promotion or relegation; participation is exclusive to the county clubs.

Lancashire holds the record for the most titles in the history of English domestic one-day cricket. They have won 12 titles across all eras of the competition. Other notable winners include Surrey, Yorkshire, and Middlesex. Worcestershire is the current title holder, having defeated Hampshire in the final.

The competition serves as the direct domestic equivalent of the One Day International. It runs concurrently with other tournaments, which means top international players are usually unavailable. This schedule emphasizes its role as a developmental platform for young players and those aiming for the England ODI squad rather than a commercial spectacle.
