The Ranji Trophy is the premier domestic first-class cricket championship in India. Organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it sits at the top of the Indian domestic cricket pyramid. The tournament serves as the primary pathway for player selection to the Indian national Test team. Matches are five-day first-class games, mirroring the international Test format. This structure tests endurance and technique, distinguishing it from the limited-overs nature of India's other major domestic competitions.
Founded for the 1934–35 season, the competition was named after Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, the first Indian to play international cricket for England. Originally titled the "Cricket Championship of India," it was renamed for the 1935–36 season. The trophy was donated by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, and the initiative was proposed by Anthony de Mello, a founder of the BCCI. Mumbai is the most successful team in the tournament's history, having won 42 titles as of the 2024–25 season. They held a record of 15 consecutive titles between 1958–59 and 1972–73.
The tournament currently features 38 teams divided into two divisions: the Elite Group and the Plate Group. The Elite Group is further split into four zones with eight teams each. In the league stage, teams play each other once within their group. The top two teams from each Elite group advance to the quarter-finals. The Plate Group consists of a single group where the top two teams earn promotion to the Elite Group for the following season. According to the BCCI, the bottom two teams from the combined Elite groups are relegated to the Plate Group. Vidarbha is the current champion, having defeated Kerala in the final of the 2024–25 season to claim their third title.
