The One-Day Cup is a domestic List A cricket competition in England and Wales. It was founded in 2014 by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to replace the Yorkshire Bank 40, marking a return to the traditional 50-over format. The tournament involves all 18 first-class counties, comprising 17 English teams and one Welsh side, Glamorgan.
The structure typically divides the 18 teams into two regional groups, North and South, for a round-robin stage. This is followed by knockout semi-finals and a final. In 2024, the final was notably reduced to 20 overs per side due to weather conditions. The competition serves as a key development pathway for England’s ODI squad, though it often suffers from player unavailability due to concurrent commitments like The Hundred.
Lancashire is the most successful club in the history of English one-day cricket, having won 17 major one-day titles across all iterations including the Gillette/NatWest Trophy. The current holder, as of 2024, is Glamorgan, who defeated Somerset in the final. The competition is distinct from the T20 Blast in that it emphasizes endurance and traditional batting skills over power-hitting. Participation is based on historic first-class status, and unlike the County Championship, it has no promotion or relegation. The One-Day Cup is the premier limited-overs (50-over) competition.
