About

The Second Eleven Championship is a domestic cricket competition in England and Wales, organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). It serves as the premier four-day development pathway for the reserve teams of the 18 first-class county clubs in England and Wales, along with the MCC Young Cricketers.

The tournament was founded in 1959, replacing the previous arrangement where first-class county second XIs competed in the Minor Counties Championship. Matches do not hold full first-class status; they lost this classification in 1962. While played in a multi-day format, typically four days, with two innings per side, these fixtures are classified as non-first-class.

Since the 2025 season, the 18 teams are divided into three groups of six teams each: Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3. Teams play each other within their group. The winner is determined by points table standings, though a final between group winners has been referenced in recent years. There is no promotion or relegation; participation is automatic for the 18 first-class counties and the MCC Young Cricketers, and the competition is closed to non-first-class teams.

Kent Second XI is the most successful club with nine titles. The inaugural title was won by Gloucestershire Second XI. The 2024 champion was Nottinghamshire Second XI. The competition also includes limited-overs variants: the Second XI Trophy, introduced in 2001, and the Second XI T20, introduced in 2011.
