About
The Second Eleven Twenty20 is a domestic cricket competition in England organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). It was founded in 2011 as a Twenty20 format counterpart to the longer Second XI Championship, serving as a development pathway for the reserve teams (Second XIs) of the 18 first-class counties in England and Wales. The competition sits below the professional first-team tiers, such as the Vitality Blast, and involves no promotion or relegation, as participation is restricted to the Second XIs of first-class counties. The format typically divides teams into regional divisions (historically North and South, evolving to include a Central Division in recent years like 2023 and 2024), with top teams progressing to a knockout final. The MCC Young Cricketers have historically participated, often in the South Division, though their involvement in the T20 format varies by year. Nottinghamshire 2nd XI, Gloucestershire 2nd XI, and Middlesex 2nd XI are tied as the most successful teams with three titles each (Nottinghamshire: 2011, 2015, 2016; Gloucestershire: 2012, 2013, 2014; Middlesex: 2017, 2018, 2019). Recent winners include Durham 2nd XI (2021, 2022) and Somerset 2nd XI (2023, 2024). The competition is distinct from the T20 Blast as it features development squads rather than first-team professionals.
