About

The Vitality Blast is the premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in England and Wales. Organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), it sits at the top tier of the domestic circuit, separate from the first-class County Championship and the 50-over Royal London One-Day Cup. The tournament features 18 teams, comprising the 17 first-class counties of England and Glamorgan, the sole first-class county from Wales. There is no promotion or relegation; membership relies on first-class status.

The competition began in 2003 after county chairmen voted to adopt the format. The structure has evolved over time. For the 2025 season, teams were divided into two groups of nine, with the top sides advancing to a knockout stage including Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and a Final. This knockout phase culminates in "Finals Day," traditionally held at Edgbaston in Birmingham, featuring single-match semi-finals and a final. A new format is scheduled to revert to three groups of six starting in 2026.

Four clubs have won the competition three times each: Leicestershire, Hampshire, Somerset, and Northamptonshire. Other winners include Surrey, Kent, Middlesex, Sussex, Birmingham Bears, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, Worcestershire, Essex, and Gloucestershire. The title changes with sponsorship, having been the Twenty20 Cup, Friends Provident t20, Friends Life t20, and NatWest t20 Blast before becoming the Vitality Blast in 2018. The event focuses on night matches and accessibility to draw younger audiences compared to traditional formats.
