The Women's Big Bash League stands as the premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition for women in Australia. Launched in the 2015–16 season by Cricket Australia, it replaced the Australian Women's Twenty20 Cup to establish a franchise-based system mirroring the men's league. The tournament operates at the top tier of the Australian women's cricket pyramid for the T20 format, functioning as a closed circuit with no promotion or relegation.
The league features eight city-based franchises, including the Hobart Hurricanes, Brisbane Heat, and Melbourne Renegades. Unlike the state-based teams found in the 50-over Women's National Cricket League, these clubs compete in a double round-robin regular season. Each team plays 14 matches against every other side before the top four advance to a knockout finals series. This stage comprises an Eliminator, a Challenger match, and a Grand Final, with the first-placed team receiving a bye to the final.
A significant structural change occurred for the 2019–20 season, when the competition became a standalone tournament running independently from October to November. Previously, it often served as a curtain-raiser to men's matches. The tournament has undergone various branding changes, moving from its initial title under Rebel Sport to its current naming rights holder, Weber.
Historically, success has been shared among several clubs. Four teams—Sydney Sixers, Brisbane Heat, Sydney Thunder, and Adelaide Strikers—each hold the record for two titles. The competition is broadcast by the Seven Network and Fox Cricket, maintaining a distinct identity from the men's equivalent through its scheduling and venue choices.
