Omar Nicolás Govea García

Omar Govea left Mexico as a teenager and did not return for the better part of a decade. Signed by América as a youth player, he never made a first-team appearance for the club and was instead sent out on loan, first to Mineros de Zacatecas, then to FC Porto B, where the move became permanent in 2016. He spent the rest of his twenties in Europe, working through spells at Royal Excel Mouscron and Royal Antwerp on loan before settling at Zulte Waregem, where he was named Player of the Month in December 2019.

His route back to Mexican football came through Monterrey, who took him on loan for the Clausura 2023 season and then exercised the buy option that December. The following June, Guadalajara paid a fee reported at around €2.3 million to bring him to Chivas on a contract running to 2027.

Govea's involvement with the national team stretches back to the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, where Mexico reached the final. He had to wait a decade for senior recognition, earning his first caps only as of December 2023, and scored his first goal for the senior side in a friendly against Colombia on 16 December 2023, in a match Mexico lost 3-2.

By the time he joined Chivas, Govea had built a well-travelled career, having played professionally in Mexico, Portugal, Belgium and Romania and passed 250 appearances at club level.
