Alytaus

Handball in Alytus dates to 1977, when a local club took shape. The name has shifted with its sponsors over the years, and the team now plays as Alytaus Varsa-Stronglasas, known around the Dzūkija region simply as Varsa. For much of its history it went by a plainer label, Alytaus rankininkai, a name tied above all to Jonas Jonuška, the coach who built and led the side for years before his death in 2017.

The club's only Lithuanian league title came in 2016, but it has rarely dropped far from the podium: silver medals in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2021, bronze as recently as 2025. The Supercup has come twice, in 2017 and 2023, though the national championship has stayed out of reach in the Cup, where two Final Four appearances, in 2016 and 2021, produced no trophy.

Home games are played in front of up to 5,500 spectators at the Alytaus sporto ir rekreacijos centras, and matches against Varėnos Ūla carry the weight of a local derby, the Dzūkijos derby, while Kauno Granitas-Karys remains the more familiar rival at the top of the table. Remigijus Čepulis, named league MVP in 2015, is among the players most associated with the club's better seasons.

Egidijus Petkevičius spent nearly a decade on the bench, from 2017 into 2026, before handing the coaching job to Tadas Stankevičius and moving into the role of club director. Varsa also competes in the Baltic Handball League, which it joined in 2020.
