Nizhny Novgorod builds hockey for the top team long before the top team ever needs it, and Chaika is the pipeline that does the work. Set up in 2009 as a farm side for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, it started life as Torpedo-2 before taking the Chaika name for its first season in the Junior Hockey League, and GAZ Group, the industrial group behind Torpedo, has owned it ever since.

The Kharlamov Cup is where the club has made its name felt beyond the academy circuit. Chaika took it in 2014–15, beating SKA-1946 4-1 in the final, and again in 2022–23 against Omskie Yastreby, 4-2. In between came a runner-up finish, lost to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in 2015–16 — a reminder that the finals don't always go their way.

What the club is really judged on, though, is who comes out the other end of it. Anton Silayev went from Chaika's ranks to becoming Torpedo's youngest-ever goalscorer.

Games are played at the V. S. Konovalenko Ice Palace, a modest 4,200-seat rink, though the bigger playoff nights have outgrown it and shifted to the Nagorny Sports Complex up the road.
