Kazan grew its ice hockey around one club, Ak Bars, long before it needed a name for the boys who might one day wear that jersey. In 2011 it settled on one: Irbis, the Tatar word for snow leopard, chosen so the junior side would no longer share a name with the senior farm team, Bars, in the Major Junior Hockey League. The team had already been playing under that older name since the league's first season in 2009/2010; the rebrand simply drew a line between the two.

Green, white and red on the jersey come straight from the Tatarstan flag, tying the club to Ak Bars rather than to any identity of its own.

Irbis won the Povolzhye Division of the Second League in its very first season, 2011/2012, a start few junior sides manage. One match against Chaika still stands apart from the rest: it ran 142 minutes and 49 seconds, the longest in the league's history. Its more recent silverware is smaller — the TNA Cup, a pre-season tournament, won in 2026 with a 3-2 final victory over Chaika Nizhny Novgorod.

What the club is actually judged on in Kazan is who comes out the other end of it. Goaltenders Artur Akhtyamov and Timur Bilyalov both graduated to Ak Bars, and their path is the one every Irbis squad is really being measured against. A Kharlamov Cup final has so far stayed out of reach.
