The banner year at the Dundee Ice Arena is 2013–14, when the Stars won the Gardiner Conference Trophy and pushed on into the playoff quarter-finals of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). It joined the EIHL in 2010 after a decade of upheaval: the British National League it was born into collapsed in 2005, and the Stars spent the years that followed in the Scottish National League, picking up the Autumn Cup twice and a Scottish Cup before the EIHL absorbed them.

None of that would have happened without the very first season. In 2001–02, with Tony Hand running the team as player-coach, Dundee won the British National League title and the playoff championship in its debut year. Hand's name has stayed attached to the club ever since as the man who built it from nothing and then kept winning with it, taking the Capital Cup twice more before the league folded under the franchise.

The rivalry that gives the season its edge is with Fife Flyers, sixteen miles down the coast; the two meet in what is known locally as the Tayside Derby. The Stars have twice gone all the way to an EIHL playoff final, in 2016–17 and 2018–19, without landing the trophy either time.

The Ward family ran the club for its entire twenty-five years before selling it in February 2026 to a consortium led by Michael O'Rourke, with the handover completing at the end of that season — the first change of ownership since Tony Hand and the Wards put a team on the ice in Dundee in 2001.
