Cricket for women in England had no national side to speak of until the Women's Cricket Association took charge of the game in 1926. That team took the field for the first time on 28 December 1934, against Australia in Brisbane — the first women's Test match ever played — and won by nine wickets.

The Ashes rivalry with Australia dates from that same tour. Their one-day history began later, on 23 June 1973 at Hove, when England opened the inaugural Women's Cricket World Cup against an International XI under the captaincy of Rachael Heyhoe-Flint.

Governance changed in 1998, when the Women's Cricket Association merged into the England and Wales Cricket Board. Officially the ECB lists the team simply as England Women, but supporters still call them the White Roses, after the emblem of Yorkshire.
