The Board of Control for Cricket in India runs the side now, though for over three decades it was the Women's Cricket Association of India, founded in 1973, that carried the administration on its own before handing over in 2006.

The runners-up finish at the 2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup sat with the team for five years, a final lost rather than a title missed narrowly. It changed in 2025, when India beat South Africa to win the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup. Asia has been a different story throughout: four ODI Asia Cups between 2004 and 2008, three T20I Asia Cups since 2012, and gold at the 2023 Asian Games.

Blue has stayed the team's colour through all of it, white reserved for Test cricket, and the crest they wear belongs to the BCCI rather than to any one city or ground.
