Koka and Zrinski Čakovec share a border rather than a table position.

The club split away from the women's section of RK Sloboda Varaždin, itself formed in 1958, when the food company Koka came in as sponsor and gave the new side its name. Before that, from 1966, the team had played as ŽRK Sloboda. In the modern top flight, the 1. HRL, third place in 2016/17 and again a year later is as close as Koka has come to the title.

What the club has produced instead is players who move on to the national team. Ivana Dežić captained Croatia before coming back to Koka in 2019, and Gabrijela Bešen, known in Varaždin as "Kokica", has kept goal for the national side as well as the club that gave her the nickname. Lana Jurina, who made her national debut in 2025, is the latest in a line that has run through the club for years.

Matches are played at the GSD Arena Varaždin, part of the Graberje sports complex.
