Alexey Guryshev scored more than 300 goals for Krylya Sovetov, took four scoring titles and won Olympic and world gold besides, and it is against his run of goals that the club's own two Soviet championships, in 1957 and 1974, still get measured. The team he played for grew out of the Krylya Sovetov sports society, the Soviet aircraft industry's own club, and settled into the Setun district of Moscow, where it still plays.

A ministerial merger forced a rename to Zenit Moscow for a season in 1953-54. The silverware from that era ran wider than the two titles: bronze nine times between 1950 and 1991, the 1951 and 1974 USSR Cups, and, abroad, the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1975 and the Spengler Cup in 1979.

The club's post-Soviet history has been rockier. In 2008 the owner of its arena, VILS, evicted the team over unpaid rent, splitting the club between a senior side sent to Podolsk and junior teams left in Moscow. The senior professional team folded outright in 2011 after pulling out of the Supreme Hockey League for lack of money. Revival came in 2016, when the club returned as a junior side in the MHL under the name MHK Krylya Sovetov, partnered with Spartak Moscow.

What has not changed is the geography. Krylya Sovetov's derbies with Dynamo Moscow and Spartak Moscow are Moscow's own, close enough in the city that the fixture against Spartak carries its own name: the Derby in Setun.
