Warszawianka are back in the I Liga, the level below Poland's top flight, after a decade of interruptions that would have finished most clubs. The senior team folded in 2004 under financial strain, came back in 2012, walked away from the league again in 2015 over a funding dispute, and returned once more in 2016. What survives now plays in the lower divisions, a modest footing for a club whose handball history stretches back to 1926, when the section began with a women's team inside the wider Warszawianka sports club.

The name meant more in Warsaw handball once. Between the early 1990s and 2002 the club took two Polish Cups and finished second and third in the national championship more than once, a run built by players such as Sławomir Szmal, who went through the club before becoming one of the more recognised Polish goalkeepers of his generation. That same senior side was still competitive enough in 2003/2004 to reach the round of 16 in the EHF Cup before the money ran out and the section was wound up.

None of that erased the rivalry with AZS AWF Warszawa, still played out as the Warsaw Derby whenever the two meet, with AZS UW, Legia and Polonia making up the older list of city opponents. The youth setup has its own high point, a national junior championship in 2001, evidence that the club's better days were not confined to the first team alone.

Matches are held at Hala Sportowa KS Warszawianka on Piaseczyńska Street, a hall that seats 250 — a reminder that this is a club running on a much smaller scale than the one that used to trouble Poland's best sides.
