Warsaw's academic district on the Vistula's western bank, Bielany, has long organised its sport around the University School of Physical Education on Marymoncka street. Handball followed a year later, and the section reached its 75th year in 2025. The men go by Akademicy, the women by Akademiczki.

In 2020 the junior women beat MMTS Kwidzyn 26:25 for the national junior title, and in December 2024 the senior women took silver in the first edition of the AZS Academic League. Neither result reaches beyond the junior or academic tiers, and the senior women's best in the Polish Cup has been the quarter-final, reached in 2016 and again in 2022.

Goalkeeper Wojciech Nowiński arrived in 1966 already a Polish junior champion from two years earlier, one of the few names from the club's handball history still remembered.

Both the men's and women's senior teams play in I Liga, a level below the top flight, and it is there, rather than in the cup, that home matches against AZS UW Warszawa are counted as the capital's own derby.
