Yaroslavl has kept a hockey team wearing red, blue and white since the Soviet years, and by the time the city's youth structure needed reorganising, Loko-76 was admitted to the Junior Hockey League on 27 July 2021, taking over from Loko-Junior, which had spent the previous eight seasons working through the National Junior Hockey League and MHL-B. The number in the name is not a birth year but the regional code for Yaroslavl Oblast, stamped onto a club owned, like its senior counterpart, by Russian Railways.

There is no derby to speak of: the city's other MHL side, Loko, answers to the same ownership.

What silverware exists sits mostly with that earlier side. Under the Loko-76 name, the MHL title itself has not yet followed.

The academy's real currency is the players it sends upward, which is the point of a club built to have no identity of its own beyond its parent's.
