Luleå HF

Every February the far north of Sweden stops for the Norra derbyn, when Luleå face Skellefteå AIK.

Luleå Hockeyförening took shape on 2 May 1977, when the ice hockey sections of IFK Luleå and Luleå SK merged. It played its first years under the name GroKo Hockey, after a sponsor, before adopting Luleå Hockeyförening in 1979. Promotion to the top flight followed in 1984, and the club has stayed there ever since — one of only two teams, alongside Färjestad BK, never to have dropped down since Sweden's premier division was established.

Luleå won the Le Mat Trophy for the first time in 1996, beating Västra Frölunda 3–1 in the final series, and did not add a second until 2025, when they defeated Brynäs IF 4–2.

Six numbers hang retired inside the Coop Norrbotten Arena, including Jan Sandström's #7 and Jarmo Myllys's #35, among them — who left for the NHL and made Luleå known well beyond Norrbotten.
