Porto

Handball took root at Futebol Clube do Porto in 1932, when the club fielded an eleven-a-side outdoor team. That version of the sport ran until the 1974–75 season, when the section switched to the indoor format that now defines it.

Since then Porto has become the country's dominant handball side, with 24 Andebol 1 titles, the most recent run stretching from 2018–19 to 2022–23. The club has also taken the Taça de Portugal nine times and holds the record for the Taça da Liga, won three times.

Europe has been less forgiving. Third-place finishes in the EHF Cup, in 2016–17 and 2018–19, remain the club's high-water mark there, and recent campaigns in the EHF European League have stopped at the quarter-finals, in 2024–25 and again the following season.

Cuban goalkeeper Alfredo Quintana played for Porto from 2010 to 2021, and after his death the club retired his number 1 shirt. Swedish coach Magnus Andersson took over in 2018, left in 2023, and returned the following year.

Matches are played at the Dragão Arena, a 2,200-seat venue, and the fiercest domestic test comes against Sporting CP in what is known locally as the Derby da Invicta, alongside a separate rivalry with Benfica.
