In the spring of 2019, a team from a city better known for its port and its carnival stood across the court from Panathinaikos in a Greek Basket League final. Promitheas Patras lost the series 3–0, but no provincial club had reached that stage before, and the run marked how far the side had come from the lower divisions it had been climbing only a few seasons earlier.

That climb had been fast. Promoted out of the fourth tier in 2013–14 and the third the year after, the club reached the top flight for 2016–17 and finished ninth in its debut season, then fourth the year after that — a pace that left the 2018–19 final feel less like an upset than an arrival. A Greek Super Cup followed in 2020, along with a Cup final the following year that ended in defeat.

The basketball section grew out of A.S. Promitheas Patras, a multi-sports club founded in 1985, with the team itself entering competition the following year. Dr. Evangelos Liolios, who also built the Coffee Island chain, has owned the club through its rise, though in July 2026 the Greek Professional Sports Commission stripped Promitheas of its licence for the 2025–26 season and fined him over a conflict of interest tied to his post as president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation.

On the continent, Promitheas has reached the Basketball Champions League quarter-finals and gone deep into the EuroCup, where Anthony Cowan Jr. was a driving figure in the 2022–23 campaign that ended against Prometey Slobozhanske.

Matches against Apollon Patras are still called the Derby of Patras. The club plays in black, white and orange at the Dimitris Tofalos Arena, a ground opened in 1995 and rebuilt in stages through 2016 to 2018, where 4,200 seats can be stretched to 5,500 when the retractable stands come out.
