Basket League represents the highest level of professional men’s basketball in Greece. Founded in 1927, the competition began as the Panhellenic Championship before undergoing several structural and naming changes over the decades. It transitioned from amateur oversight to a professional entity under HEBA/ESAKE in 1992. Currently sponsored as Stoiximan GBL, the league sits at the top of the national pyramid.
The season structure prioritises consistency. All participating teams engage in a double round-robin format during the regular phase. This extensive schedule ensures every side plays each other twice. Following this initial period, a play-in tournament involves clubs ranked seventh through tenth. These teams compete for the final two spots in the postseason. The top eight clubs then advance to the playoffs. Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds operate on a best-of-3 basis, culminating in a best-of-5 final to determine the champion.
Progression and retention are strictly managed. The club finishing at the bottom of the table is automatically relegated to the second tier, known as the Greek Elite League. Conversely, the champion of that second division earns immediate promotion. A second promotion place is allocated through a playoff involving the upper echelons of the second tier. This system maintains a clear pathway between the professional and semi-professional levels.
Panathinaikos holds the record for the most titles, with forty victories. Olympiacos secured their sixteenth championship in the most recent season. The competition remains distinct from the Greek Basketball Cup, which operates as a knockout tournament. While the cup offers a single-elimination format, the league rewards sustained performance throughout the year. The league’s history includes periods under SEGAS and HBF supervision before settling into its current professional framework.
