The Greek Women's Basketball League, officially known as A1 Ethniki, sits at the apex of the national basketball pyramid. Founded in 1967, the competition began its inaugural season in 1967–68. Its governance has been handled by the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) since 1969, taking control from the earlier Hellenic Federation of Sports (EOAP). This structure distinguishes it from the men's equivalent, which operates under a different body.
The current season features eight clubs: Amyntas Women, Anorthosis Volou Women, Athinaikos Women, Giannina Women, Neas Ionias W, Olympiacos Women, with Sporting Athens, Panathinaikos, and Athinaikos historically prominent. The regular season follows a double round-robin format where each team plays every other side twice. This results in 22 rounds of play. After the regular campaign, the league splits into two distinct paths. The top four teams advance to semi-finals played as a series, with the winners meeting in a best-of-five final to decide the champion. Teams ranked eighth through eleventh enter play-outs to avoid relegation.
Olympiacos Women hold the current title, having extended their dominance to nine consecutive championships from 2015–16 through 2024–25. This streak is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records. Sporting Athens remains the most successful club in the league's history with 21 titles, including a record 20 consecutive championships between 1976–77 and 1995–96. Panathinaikos and Athinaikos each hold five titles. Promotion from the second tier, A2 Ethniki, is awarded to the top two teams from the second tier, often determined by regional group winners. The league underwent several name changes, including "A National" between 1984 and 1997, before settling on its current designation.
Playoffs were introduced in the 2010–11 season, adding a structured conclusion to the regular season. The competition continues to evolve with a focus on elite performance and national representation.
